Happy Birthday… Franz Marc

February 8, 2011

Franz Marc was born on february the 8th in the year 1880 in Munich, Germany. He died – only 36 years old – in WW1.

He was member of the Neue Künstlervereinigung München, but left the group in the same year, together with Wassiliy Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter and Alfred Kubin, to found the group Der Blaue Reiter. He was one of the most important figures in the German Expressionist movement. Visit the Wikipedia for an overview of his life and your local book store or library for more information.

I love expressionism. I always have and I always will. Marc developed his own style over 10 years, being influenced by the late Impressionists as well as by Fauvism. His aim was to show the inner and more spiritual aspect of nature, which he did by reducing everything to the most important and stepping away from natural colors. His artworks are pure beauty in color and form and I cannot decide which I love most, so here are my favourites:

Tiger by Franz Marc

Blue Horse by Franz Marc

Die kleinen blauen Pferde by Franz Marc

Fuechse by Franz Marc

Zerbrochene Formen by Franz Marc

Kleine Komposition II by Franz Marc

If you happen to have the chance to see Franz Marc’s work live, then do it. I promise you will be speechless and taken away in the face of these wonderful expressive colors.
