Happy Birthday… Vincent van Gogh

March 30, 2011

Vincent van Gogh was born 30th march in 1853 in the Netherlands. He created more than 850 paintings and more than 1,000 drawings – as far as experts know to date. It’s still possible that some of his works aren’t identified yet, while a lot of imitations are available at the same time, which are not identified too. The reason for this is van Goghs popularity – which he unfortunately wasn’t able to experience himself. During his lifetime he almost wasn’t able to make a living from his art.
In addition to his unbelievable amount of artworks he also left behind a huge number of letters, from which the world was able to learn a lot about his self-image as an artist and his work.
Vincent van Gogh died – only 37 years old – 1890 in France. For more information about his life please visit Wikipedia and your local library or book store.

Undoubtedly van Gogh had – and still has – a high influence on modern and contemporary artists. His view on the world, his wonderful use of color, the way he was able to express his emotions and catch light and atmosphere still fascinates not only fellow artists.

I like almost all his paintings and several of his drawings. He created awesome portraits (and self-potraits), such as Portrait of Joseph-Michel Ginoux
the portrait of Joseph-Michel Ginoux, which almost looks like an caricature to me, or the self-portait with dark felt hat. Self-Portrait with Dark Felt Hat.

He also drew a wide range of subjects, such as landscapes Behind the Hedgesnudes
Female Nude, Standing
and buildings
St. Martin's Church at Tongelre.

My personal favourites are his beautiful sunflowers, e.g. Vase with Twelve Sunflowers and several of his watercolor paintings, such as Beach with People Walking and Boats
and
Scheveningen Woman Knitting.

The The Vincent van Gogh Gallery – an online gallery – shows all of his artworks and the letters. Check it out and enjoy!
