Happy Birthday… Max Ernst

April 2, 2011

I see myself as a surrealist artist, so of course I do like the artworks created by the German artist Max Ernst. He was born on april the 2nd in 1891 in Brühl/Germany and belongs to the Dadaism and Surrealism. His art was defamed and labled as abnormal by the Nazis and he was arrested several times until he finally escaped to the U.S. in 1941. Together with others he became editor of the art magazine VVV and won a prize for one of his paintings. But in 1953 he went back to Paris/France where he finally became an international sucessful artist. He died one day before his 85th birthday on april the 1st in 1976 in Paris. For more information about Max Ernst please visit Wikipedia and your local library or book store.

Max Ernst was very interested in Philosophy and I think this is good to see in his art. Here are some of my personal favourites:

The Equivocal Woman
Human Form
Design in Nature
Seascape

If you ever happen to visit Cologne in Germany (or some other place close to that one), take some time to visit the Max-Ernst-Museum, it’s worth it :).
